Dr. Deborah Shapiro is an Associate Professor in the Department of Kinesiology and Health at Georgia State University. Her expertise includes adapted physical education and physical activity. Deborah has worked with individuals with physical disabilities, visual impairments and individuals with intellectual disabilities in recreation programs, summer camps, and has taught adapted physical education to students with disabilities ages preschool through 21 in public and center schools.

Deborah has an impressive record in research/scholarship, teaching, and service. As a researcher in the area of psychosocial factors influencing sport participation among individuals with disabilities, she has published articles in the Adapted Physical Activity Quarterly, International Journal of Sport Psychology, Teaching Exceptional Children, Therapeutic Recreation Journal, Journal of Visual Impairment and Blindness, and Journal of Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance and has made presentations at international, national, regional and state conferences.

Dr. Shapiro has received several awards for her scholarship and leadership in the field of adapted physical activity including: the Georgia Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance (GAHPERD) Young Scholar award in 2002, AAHPERD’s Mabel Lee Award in 2003 and Southern District AAHPERD Taylor Dodson Award in 2005. Also in 2005, Dr. Shapiro received Georgia State University’s College of Education Outstanding Faculty Service Award. Since 2002, Dr. Shapiro has worked as a sport classifier for NDSA.

Dr. Shapiro received a Bachelors degree from York University in Toronto, Canada, a Masters degree in adapted physical education and motor development from Michigan State University and her Ph.D. in adapted physical education and motor development from Indiana University.

Dr. Shapiro is a member of the Adapted Physical Activity Council of AAPAR, has served as President of the North American Federation of Adapted Physical Activity, has been newsletter editor for the International Federation of Adapted Physical Activity since 2005 and serves on the editorial review board for the Adapted Physical Activity Quarterly journal.
