ATLANTA CAPTURES 4TH STATE TITLE IN MILESTONE YEAR
AAASP 15th Anniversary

March 12, 2011, ATLANTA, GA — The Atlanta Wolfpack reached a milestone in adapted sports history when it captured its 4th AAASP/GHSA State Wheelchair Basketball Varsity Championship title with a score of 35 -25, pulling away from West Georgia in the 5th period of what had until then been a very tight game, trading basket for basket.

Reese Johnson, a senior, led the team in scoring with 12 points, but Alexander Amey also scored an impressive 11 points to put Atlanta over the top.

The Wolfpack , like other AAASP member teams, represents students with physical disabilities attending a single school district or a cooperative of districts - in this case Atlanta Pubic Schools. Andrea Arnold and Jimmy Roberts coach the team, with long time former coach, Onie Lawson now serving as Area Coordinator for the district. Each expressed gratitude and excitement to be part of the milestone of achieving a four-time winning record in state titles in basketball.

It was a hard fought battle against the West Georgia Wolverines of Meriwether County Schools, who played an emotional game as they sought to bring the trophy home to Richard McIntyre – their own Coach "Mac." McIntyre, who did not attend the Championship in person, was recently diagnosed with cancer. Now post surgery, he will undergo radiation. His son, Ric McIntyre, coached the team at the championship.

The day was rich with milestones as the American Association of Adapted Sports Programs (AAASP) celebrates its 15th year in 2011 as the nation's only association representing an interscholastic membership of school district adapted sports teams and high school athletic associations including Georgia, Florida and Kentucky. This year also marks the 10th anniversary of the alliance formed between AAASP and the Georgia High School Association (GHSA) and the 8th consecutive year of Georgia Public Broadcasting televising the game along with other GHSA basketball playoffs.
